Easter Monday Cup Final 2008
Result:
Cardigan 0 v 1 New Quay (after extra-time)
Following last year's terrific final, there were high hopes of similar excitement this year. However, a sodden pitch and blustery conditions meant that this year's showpiece final was a dour affair.
During the first half, chances were few and far between. Both teams had just a single scoring opportunity apiece though neither was capitalised upon. After ten minutes a strong Cardigan shot on target was headed off the line by Charlie Dent. At the other end, Bryn Evans should have made more of a rare mistake by Cardigan's Justin Evans but ended up shooting tamely at the keeper.
The second half continued in the same way although New Quay probably had the majority of the possesion, they didn't create any clear cut chances. Any half chances that did occur were all blasted wide or easily picked off by the keeper.
A fairly uneventful game slipped in to extra-time.
Ten minutes in to the first period of extra time came the games' major turning point. New Quay's Charlie Dent took the ball in to the Cardigan penalty area only to be brought down by a mis-timed Seamus Dougherty tackle for a clear penalty. Bryn Evans, making up for his earlier miss, calmly stepped up to score the game's only goal from the spot.
New Quay never looked like letting the lead slip away from them and were able to hang-on to claim the League Cup for the first time in their history.
